What is the Environment Committee?

A Committee, which meets on an ad hoc basis, when necessary, to take action on various environmental issues, or even sometimes just socially to enjoy each other's company

A Network, connected electronically (website, e-mail, telephone) or through printed communications on a continuing basis to keep members informed of each others' activities and other important information (about legislation, research, and the like) as a means of contributing to a growing awareness of those things which affect all parts of God's Creation and of how we may have a positive effect on its healing and preservation.

What have its past activities been?

Sponsoring a yearly Environmental Poster Contest, open to all persons in the Diocese of Rhode Island

Participating in the Rhode Island Earth Day Committee and sponsoring an exhibit at the annual Earth Day Festival

Joining and participating in meeting of the Environment Council of Rhode Island, an umbrella organization of environmental groups throughout the state (currently, the chair is Vice President for Development, Membership)

Meeting with the Province One (New England) Environmental Network to promote a concern for creation among the dioceses and parishes of our province

Submitting resolutions on environmental issues to Diocesan Convention

Presenting exhibits at Diocesan Convention and the Resource Center

Promoting education on important environmental issues and ways we can work for the betterment of our relationship with the whole of creation through actions we take in our daily lives, through bulk mailing and in RISEN

What is planned for the future?

Building on past successes, with NEW INITIATIVES provided by a GROWING NETWORK OF INDIVIDUALS AND/OR GROUPS IN EVERY CONGREGATION IN THE DIOCESE!

YOU are needed, for ideas, information, and support!

CONTACT Mary Hitt if you're interested in joining this important work — in whatever way, from merely joining the network and receiving and giving information and spreading it locally, to participating in committee efforts to effect change
